Not that I'm entirely too familiar with the world of Linux admins and what they should be paid, but look at the location and rate of pay compared to the amount of experience wanted...

puertorico1985 Member Posts: 205It's going to work out like this...no experienced professional will apply...random applicants with no real experience will apply hoping to get the call...the business having nobody with ten years exp apply, will call the highest qualified of the not-really-qualified professionals, and some lucky person will get the job.

DoubleNNs Member Posts: 2,015 ■■■■■□□□□□I don't know if you can call it lucky @ 12/hr. Even 1 year of linux experience is worth more. (But then again, I'm from the NYC area.)Goals for 2018:
Certs: RHCSA, LFCS: Ubuntu, CNCF CKA, CNCF CKAD | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Solutions Architect Pro, AWS Certified Security Specialist, GCP Professional Cloud Architect
Learn: Terraform, Kubernetes, Prometheus & Golang | Improve: Docker, Python Programming

RHEL Member Posts: 195 ■■■□□□□□□□Well... I live in probably one of the lowest CoL area in the country and with 0 yrs experience, I thought $36K plus benefits was atrocious. With 4 yrs in the same area I'm mid 70's and I think that's about market.
However, I keep seeing a craigslist posting in my area for a 3rd tier unix/linux expert to work with directors in a business to business environment for $12/hr.
Whether it was intended to be or not, that is a joke. -
dopedsmurf Member Posts: 36 ■■□□□□□□□□That's barely above minimum wage her in Washington State. My assumption is that someone has a very small business, or attempting to start a very small business, and has the need for some Linux administration.
Just use websites like monster.com, hotjobs.com, dice.com, etc., to search for Linux administrator positions (or whatever position you are interested in). That will give you a good idea of what kind of compensation you should expect.
Good luck in your search! -

I always enjoy the comeback posts where people post in the job sections flaming the lowball jobs like that one.
Craigslist can have good leads but you should never rely on only one source of job listings.
If that business needs Linux help so cheap, they should just advertise for a consultant in the gigs section.Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

W Stewart Member Posts: 794 ■■■■□□□□□□If it's not a joke it's still pretty funny. I made at least $12.50/hr working on linux point of sales systems with no experience. Even over here in Tampa, FL where the IT job market isn't all that great a linux admin with 10 years of experience can still get a job paying at least 80k/yr.

SteveFT Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 149Probably just someone trolling in response to crazy job posts on Craigslist. I saw one today that was looking for a level 2-3 network administrator with at least 5 years of experience for ~$40k. This is in the Boston area too. I forget exactly what they were looking for, but it essentially sounded more like an $80k+ job.

djentlemetal Member Posts: 53 ■■□□□□□□□□This was just a post on Craigslist I came across yesterday as I was looking through the Systems/Networking jobs section. I showed my roommate the same post last night and he almost had a snot bubble come out of his nose from laugh/snortingAAS - Networking and Cyber Security

sj4088 Member Posts: 114 ■■■□□□□□□□Good luck with that. He's going to need it. lol
What's going to happen is he is going to have to hire an "linux admin" who has never even heard of linux. lol
Linux admin with 10 years experience is an $85k per year job easily. -
Raisin Member Posts: 136Unless he kicks in more money he's going to have to settle for someone who's Linux experience was that one time where they downloaded Ubuntu, but then went back to Windows because they couldn't get any of their games to work.

alexander77 Member Posts: 54 ■■□□□□□□□□The author doesn't even takes the time to describe the type of skills needed...let alone offering $12 an hour for 10 years of experience...you could get more with 10 years in Desktop let alone a Linux professional.
