I changed companies 3 times, changed roles in my current company 4 times, moved 5 times. I looked at what the sales people struggled with, what our customers wanted to know, and what skills were needed on the big jobs and became the SME on those skills. I networked, did a lot of work for business units outside my role, started a blog, and networked some more. So far it seems to be paying off.
