Job Advice

I am currently working part time at a consulting company working mainly on Cisco network equipment. I enjoy what I do and where I am working but we are experiencing under-utilization and I can't be brought on full-time. I recently did a phone interview for a position at another company and they asked if i could come in to check out their facility and do an in-person interview. The new position is what they call a staging role where I would be responsible for racking up new equipment and configuring the devices for deployment and troubleshooting config. problems. They primarily deal with Juniper and HP devices and I have only dealt with Cisco. The new role would pay more and be full-time. It would also be a longer commute. My question would be is this a step in the right direction for someone just finishing school looking for good networking experience even though it doesn't necessarily line up with the certification route i have started?

It definitely sounds like a great step in the right direction. I would take them up on their offer and see where it goes.

Always good to learn new technologies.

I all for learning as much as I can. From what the interviewer told me it will be wireless, routers, switches, firewalls so it should be a fantastic learning experience. I just wasn't sure if my outlook on it was practical. It seems that the higher paying jobs are more specialized. And I'm not doing it just for the money but truth be told it is a large incentive. It is also through a recruiter if that makes any difference.

I see absolutely no harm in that. Why not?

I see absolutely no harm in going and checking the place out and I am tomorrow. I just really like the place I'm at now and am not sure I want to jump ship. I question if I should just ride it out and see if business picks up or just move on. I get really good experience where I'm at and the only drawback is that there isn't a full-time position available.

I definitely think it would be a good thing to get your feet wet in other vendor's technologies. Just don't let your Cisco skills get rusty if you can avoid it. Cisco still has the largest footprint in the networking market so it's good to keep those skills fresh for future positions.

Good luck on whatever you choose.
