Thank You Letter to manager?

Had an interview yesterday morning for a contract role. Is it's professional to send my "thank you" email directly to the manager, who doesn't know I got his email address from the recruiter, or have the recruiter send it to him?

Hand write it, and snail mail it. I've heard from some hirings managers that was the decision maker, but anyone in a management role gets 10,000 emails a day, so yours would probably upset the manager more than do good.
