What are some general pocket tools one would expect an IT Specialist or Desk side Tech to have on them at most times? What are some things that can prepare the tech for the environment? How should a desk side tech dress?

Powerful mini flashlight. Makes life much easier when you can see what your working on. -

V-neck sweater + shirt... minus the sweater during summer.

A decent mini maglight is what I keep in the draw. I use to carry it around but now phone torch with the camara is a great tool. Plus a decent bar code scanner app. Great for reading serial numbers in dark dusty corners.
Dress code? Well think of visiting shops. What do staff wear who serve you. General its on the smarter side of casual. On first day in a new job unless I was told different it would be shoes shirt and smart trousers. Then look around and see what every one else is wearing. In future aim to be smarter than 80% of them.
Or simply ask manager what the dress code is.- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. Albert Einstein

For me, I carry a 32GB flash drive, a Leatherman Style and a Samsung S5. I'm amazed at how many pictures I end up taking. -

+1 with out doubt you want a small knife, pliers, screwdrivers and cutters. So either a small tool kit, or as Rocket suggests a leatherman is the perfect tool to carry around.- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. Albert Einstein
