WGU 7 CUs left

I've only got the technical writing paper and the capstone left for this semester but it looks like I may not be able to get financial aid due to not being enrolled full-time. I don't know if I'm going to have to pay this last semester out of pocket or not. I really wish my mentor would have said something about it and I'm starting to feel like I'm getting screwed over for trying to finish my degree early. Has anybody else been in this situation? Did you have to pay the last semester out of pocket and were you able to get a reduced rate?

You have to be at least half time to get fin aid but I don't remember how much CUs that is for WGU. Call the financial aid office and speak to them about it. Maybe you can add a class or worst case change your major to pick up those classes. Do what you have too but you must finish! I am in my last semester with 5 classes left and 3 months to finish. The struggle...

Yes but the website currently says that you have to be enrolled full-time to get financial aid and it's got a red flag on the financial aid section of the student portal for not being enrolled full-time.

I'm not sure how financial aid works with WGU because I didn't use it. I do know that WGU will prorate your tuition since you're not taking the full 12 CU's. I'm guessing they'll charge you about half the normal 3k. Depending on your situation there could be some decent tax benefits to paying out of pocket. Just something to consider if you can't figure out a way to get financial aid for your final term.

Whatever you do, don't stop now you're way too close to the finish line.

Yeah I know. I've got the technical writing paper and the capstone finished already. I'm still waiting on a response from the busar but luckily I'm about to start a contract that pays very well just in-case I do have to pay out of pocket.

Did your last term end on 5/31? If so why didn't you turn in the completed tech writing and capstone if it was all you had left? Either way, if it's all you have left and they are done already a day into term just call them and ask/beg for some kind of extension since the work is already done.

From what I remember, financial aid was only at full time, 12 credits, I could be wrong though. I'm not sure why your mentor didn't tell you, but I know the financial aid documents were very clear that you need a certain number of credits to be considered full time and to get aid.

I vaguely remember WGU having some mechanism for an extension other than prorating if you only need a few days or couple weeks. Please report back what you find out.

I was being stupid and trying to calculate things without all the information I guess. I wanted to push my graduation date back another 6 months so that I could get a raise before I had to start paying back student loans.

Either way I think it still worked out.

Western Governors University is processing a $ 1,412.00 PELL Grant on 06/02/2014.These funds will apply to your WGU tuition and fees.

I'm not getting student loans which is fine because it's less debt for me but it looks like my grant still went through. What's crazy is there's probably no way I'd qualify for a grant next semester so I'm definitely making sure I graduate this semester.

I am very glad I found your thread! I will be in a similar situation during my next (last) term. My mentor incorrectly told me that I would get finaid even with only doing 6cu, obviously this is not the case. I'm thinking that I will leave 12cu for my last term, because I could really use the loans to help pay back, well the previous loans lol. I am very scared that when repayment comes (6mo after graduation) that I will not have a good enough job and/or not be in good enough financial shape to make the payments.

    Good luck to you Stewart!
