Letters of reccomendation

I am leaving my current job in two weeks for a better gig. I was walking to one of the end users I see regularly and told her I was leaving. She asked if she wanted a letter of recommendation to take with me; not knowing what to say I said sure and thanks!
It got me thinking though, are letters like this useful if they are from those we support as opposed to those we work with or work under?

You must have had quite a positive impact to have someone offer a recommendation - very cool!
A letter of recommendation is always great to have. The problem is that it's not something that someone will ask you to present so you are limited in how and when you can use it. Perhaps a better approach is to ask your colleague to connect with you via LinkedIn - and then she can write a nice glowing recommendation which will be in your profile for all to see. -

When my last contract ended, my employer told me that if I needed a recommendation he would be very pleased to hand me one. I told him that I'd rather a recommendation via LinkedIn and some skills endorsed, and so did he (an another coworkers ask 'em for endorsements!!).
