Please help me with my Resume...

Hello!

I have recently moved back to the US after taking some school in Canada.

I had initially received a B.Sc. in Physiology and Pharmacology, before switching into a 2 year Computer Systems Technology program, which I only completed 1 year of. I have decided that I want to start working now, as oppose to continuing with school, as I had spent my last 6 years in school, and was essentially burning out.

My current goal is to pursue a career in Networking while looking to further that into the Security sector. I am not yet sure how to best pursue this, as I have had no 'real' work experience in the IT field in my past.

I was wondering if you could help me improve my resume and also give me some pointers as to where I should be looking for, for a first job.

I have spoken to some people, and they have suggested looking for an internship, while others have mentioned working (for example) in the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Ideally, I would hope to get a position in a help-desk setting, but from the job applications that I have seen, most require a minimum of 1 year experience.

Well, you have come to the right place and fist of all, Congrats on deciding to join the realm of computer networking and security!! Certifications are a great way to start off! Start by pursuing your CompTIA A+. This will provide an overall general start to the realm of IT. From there you can branch out. If possible, try to match your certifications with the classes that you are taking for your 2 year degree track. Ex: If you are taking a class on Cisco networking and learning about different routing and switching protocols, maybe consider pursuing your CCENT or CCNA certification(s). This will ultimately fill in the missing holes in the courses that you are taking and will make you stand out once you complete your degree! I would avoid Geek Squad at all costs your time will be better spend doing more productive studying (in my opinion.) Try and volunteer to gain more IT experience. If you are trying to get paid position without any prior knowledge or experience then you will be out of luck. If you are volunteering on the other hand, that would show to many people (and to me at least if I was an employer,) that you are serious and will take time out of your day to gain knowledge (knowledge is the end all be all (joking evil laugh)!! Yes the tasks may be tedious, but it is a start and you have to start somewhere! Also, try and learn a programming language if possible (assuming you have a strong math background (Java or Python)) I hope this at least gives you some insight!
