Passed my 74-409 with a 950 score this weekend. I probably studied too much. At the same time, I was training someone where I work on Hyper-V for a new customer we were implementing a Hyper-V based cluster and well that was probably a big help on the exams scenario-based questions.
It is great to understand what tools to use in the best situation for updating images, deployment, and migration (the migration I think most have trouble with on what tools to use and the steps you need).
My study material was:
- Free Microsoft Virtual Academy Hyper-V 2012 R2 and System Center training. * This was the bulk of what I did. I tried to only do an hour at a time since after an hour I tended to just not fully comprehending what they were saying. Afterwards I pulled up the slides that are provided and looked up each item listed to get a better understanding on their slide notes.
- Veeam offers a free study guide on this exam I used: Free Study Guide for Microsoft Exam 74-409
- Used VMware Workstation on my local computer to run a nested environment
I tried to do this completely free and the only item with a cost associated is VMware workstation which I already owned. I used this to create a nested virtual environment similar to what I do with ESXi. This way you can properly simulate having multiple Hyper-V hosts. With this I was able to install older versions of Server and setup clustering followed by migrations to 2012 R2. It worked great and ended up being completely free with great experience gained and I got the exam for the free promo when it was available.

Congratulations! Not sure what your future exam plans are but the 70-414 has some good overlap with the 70-409. I do not see any MCSA 2012 exams in your profile so it may be a bit premature to think that far ahead.

Overlap is good. I am moving onto a VMware specific role but it is mostly with 2008 R2 servers and eventually 2012 so I think the smart thing for me is to go after 2012 Certs for MCSA while I patiently wait for my Stanly VMware VCA5 course to be available. -

a microsoft specialist cert and is also used as a third exam elective for the MCSA:2012 vs the 70-412 exam.2019 Goals
