Your USB to Serial Converter is based on the Prolific PL2303 Chipset.

Try to manually install the latest driver (PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1.9.0.zip) via Device Manager:
    PL2303 Windows Driver Download

If that doesn't solve the issue, try using an older driver:

    bit.ly/UAV4Ul

    Hope this helps.

Under Device Manager on your computer can you check and see which driver is currently running for the adapter.
In v3.4.31.231 there was a fix for a issue: "Fixed Putty/HTerm BSOD issue in Win7 64-bit."

As a workaround, try to install and use one of these terminal emulators:

    Tera Term (free)
    SecureCRT (free 30-day evalution copy)

You just have to browse around and read reviews to find an alternative product.
If you look up your device on Amazon there seems to be a few people with similar issue.

I run a media machine with a gigabyte board in it and have had the exact same problem, running Win 7 64bit, I had to play with the memory settings to get it stable, running max memory with win 7 on some of their boards does not provide the correct timings and voltage to the memory which can cause random re-boots. you might do a google search about random re-boots on your board and see what others are saying about it.
