After three years...

I finally made it. Completed a MBA in Finance and a Grad. Certificate in Financial Analysis.

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!

Wow, it was a long long road. Having to do night classes with a 2 year old and working full time, it's like I had three jobs.

Was the MBA worth it? Yeah, yeah it was. In fact, I wish I knew this stuff 10 years ago.

Will I go on to do anything in the finance field? Probably not. It's good to know this stuff for budgets and projects, working with accounting systems and SOX, and a whole lot more. Plus it's good for personal finances, and if I ever wanted to start my own company (I do, maybe in a year or two). I'll keep on in the Infosec/Governance/Risk field though.

Will I do any more schooling? Not for a LONG LONG TIME! No more papers or homework. Get to have date night with my wife again. If I ever would go back, it would probably be for a technical masters such as in Information Assurance or Information Security (honestly, I could probably teach the classes, so I'm not sure as to the value), though I would be only a year away from a masters in accounting and finance as well (I took advanced finance and accounting courses instead of the easy ones to set it up that way).

WOO HOO!!! Time to go celebrate.

Nice work!

While the MBA hasn't helped as much for me, it has taught me about project financing like you mentioned. How to handle charge backs, costing and planning strategy.

I was lucky to have had a lot of ABC already under my belt before learning from a book. That helped out a lot.

yuddhidhtir: I would say something along the lines of "It's important for a IT leader to both understand technology as well as the business and future business objectives, and having a MBA in finance goes a long way to being able to take those business objectives and translate them into operational IT requirements."

Was your study at a B&M school or online?

I plan on going to an AACSB 100% online MBA program next year. Doing some pre-req courses now (acct, mgt, etc)

It was a combination of B&M school and online - first half was on-site, the second half was online. Both ways worked for me for absorbing knowledge.

Nice also on prepping for the online MBA - it's worth it.

Congrats, many of the Fortune 500 CIO's have a finance/accounting background because of the regulatory and business aspects of managing IT. You set yourself up well for the future with your degree combo...

I've not seen a CIO without a Finance, MBA, Accounting, Statistics or Economic Masters in all 4 of the fortune 500 companies I have worked for.

Even in the small shops the IT executives have majors related to these. Obviously it's not impossible we have a few executives who post on this forum. Bottom line you better know the difference between CAPEX and OPEX and be able to manage upward and understand business financials or you are going to get destroyed.
