Hey mates, I'm up on the 23rd I'm still not perfect with subnetting but I feel like I'll be some what ready by the 23rd. However, what do you guys think of subnetting? Should I take Todd Lamel's advice and memorize it and learn to do it in my head or just remember the steps? Thanks Mates!

I'm having a hard time with subnetting too, but:
From what I have been told by experienced network techs, most of which have passed the CCNA is that you MUST know subnetting, and pretty well, or your chances of passing are dramatically lowered.
learntosubnet.com is always good too. just work with it, breathe, try not to be intimidated.
Good luck!

I've did the CCNA single exam a couple of years ago and marginally failed. I can confirm that subnetting is a major component of the exam. In my opinion, it's not useful memorizing subnetting.. I find it easier having learnt the techniques of subnetting.
I'm sure people have already posted this, but this website is very handy:

Good luck...

Hi,
I am doing exam next wed.
This is my take,
1 you got to understand how to subnet - 100%
2 if you find (or have your own) steps \ tips etc .. write them down.
This is what I do:
Before the test, I write down /30 to /16 with all the info I wil need, this takes about 30 seconds to put this table on paper.
From that I am saving myself lots of time, dont have to work them out again etc ...
But this might not work for everyone. I understand subnetting - at last, but I find that in tests etc .. I will still taking too long, until I started to use my table etc ....

Thanks everyone for your quick replies and advises. I'll practice both ways and stick whichever method is easier for me.

It looks like you've received significant response but I'll add my 2 cents and say you MUST understand subnetting and that you should be able to do it relatively quickly. Follow Tom's advice.
If somehow you're able to pass the CCNA without a firm grasp of subnetting (I'd be pretty amazed, shocked even), you'll have to learn it anyway to work in the field and definitely to pass any higher level Cisco certs. I've had a failrly involved networking job for about 6 months now and this is absolutely true at the hospital I work in. Subnetting is a core concept in the profession -- even if you're not pursuing a strictly networking job, any systems-oriented I.T. person in my opinion should understand subnetting.

Everyone tells me that once you learn subnetting, it's fine and it'll stick.
I think that they should be flogged
