Inter VLAN routing - which IOS supports this compatibility ?

Hi,
I have just purchased a Cisco 2600 router for the purposes of practicing Inter Vlan routing amongst other things.
When trying to configure the sub-interfaces I get the following message

Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if thatsubinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q or ISL vLAN

Also when I try and configure the encapsulation command it displays an unrecognised command error.
After some investigating I think the current IOS on the router does not support Inter Vlan routing, its IOS 12.2

I believe IOS 12.4 supports inter vlan routing, can anyone confirm this and where can I get this IOS from ?

Also how do you know which IOS will be compatible with your device ?

You can Google for the specific image you want. Check the Cisco Feature Navigator to determine which IOSes are supported on your device and what they support (Cisco Feature Navigator - Cisco Systems) That said, I thought pretty much all IOSes supported Inter-VLAN Routing until I ran across this --

I also have a 2600 and came across this error when practicing ROAS. I would be interested in the solution as well.

I have access to several versions of IOS 12.4

OK, thanks for the replies, so it looks like any of these IP Plus feature set IOS will do me as long as they are FLASH 16MB max.
The Cisco feature navigator states the minimum DRAM is 48MB and FLASH 16MB.

The 2621XM router I have just purchased has 32MB DRAM and 16MB FLASH.
I have ordered 128MB of DRAM to upgrade.

I have taken the cover off my 2621XM router and there are 2 memory slots, one has 32MB DRAM, the other is empty.

To upgrade the memory do I just insert the new 128MB in the spare slot ?

Or do you have to put the biggest memory in the first slot (at the moment occupied by the 32MB) ?

Can I leave the 32MB in and the new 128MB (totaling 160MB) ?

Take a look at the Official Cisco upgrade page on this router, it looks like you can run it at 160mb

I'd try it both ways and see what happens. Didn't see anything in the following link about memory install order for 26xxXM but it does matter on the 2691.

Just got my hands on IOS c2600-i-mz.122-12a which has the IP PLUS feature set and only requires 48MB DRAM and 16MB FLASH to install

So just waiting for my delivery of 128MB of memory then I’ll try out and see what happens

Like I said, I have several IOS versions for the 2600 and 2600XM routers, at last count I have 28 different versions including the 12.4T IOS versions. I also have access to many other versions of IOS, for many different switches and routers.

UPDATE

So the new 128GB of memory arrived this morning, when installed I got the following message:

System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(7r) [cmong 7r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Bad RAM at location 0x00000000: wrote 0x55555555, read 0x55455555

Tried placing the new 128MB memory in the first slot and the existing 32MB in the second, then existing 32MB in the first slot and new 128MB in the second. Then new 128MB in the first slot on it’s own. Finally returned to installing the existing 32MB in the first slot on it’s own and am back to normal.

So I am guessing the new 128MB of memory is faulty ?

Is this common ?

You did get the correct type of ram, right, the 2621XM uses SDRAM, some of the older 2600 series routers use EDO ram. Did you read the link to the upgrade procedures?

I have never got a bad ram module.

Bloody good question, the memory listing just stated the following

NEW Cisco 128mb 2600xm Dram Memory

2610XM 2611XM 2620XM 2621XM 2650XM 2651XM

MEM2600XM-128D

I have emailed the seller and asked the question

Can all but guarantee that's bad RAM. Error indicates a single bit flip. If you swap positions of the 128 and 32 module the location should move too.

I don't remember if EDO and SDRAM were pin compatible, but I know they aren't electrically compatible so i doubt it would even be able to see the module if it was the wrong type.

If the seller listed it specifically for this router, then I am sure he would have sent the correct memory, so it is probably a bad module, but it never hurts to double check.

Also, make sure and read through the upgrade procedures on the link provided, I can't remember which one it was, but many years ago a friend of mine upgraded his router memory and could not get it to boot correctly, when he inquired about it, they told him to reset the router by pulling a pin short cap and reset the bios on the mother board, when he did that, it then booted correctly.

Hi,
The seller has confirmed that the memory is for the 2600xm series (SDRAM) not for 2600 (EDO RAM).
The memory upgrade procedures on the link provided just state that after installing - Reinstall the router cover.

He is sending a replacement, should be here at the weekend, I will give another update then......thanks for all the advice so far

The whole point of upgrading memory was because I needed an IOS which supported Inter Vlan routing.

The IOS I loaded that supported 802.1q vlan trunking was c2600-js-mz.122-28 from the ENTERPRISE PLUS feature set, this IOS supports inter vlan routing on 2621XM routers and requires at least 48MB DRAM and only 16MB FLASH to install.

Nice, but you meant 2621 not 2621XM right? Since the first ram you got WAS for the XM but didn't work for you because your router was NON-XM model correct?

No. he ordered ram for the 2600XM and it arrived faulty and so got a direct replacement.
