DHCPv6 and duplicate address detection

Need clarification:
When a host request an address from either stateful or stateless DHCPv6 and the address is a duplicate, what happens next?
With stateful DHCPv6 it would keep track of leased addresses...but stateless does not.

I think that with so many addresses possible, and the DAD protocol, that it would never even happen.
