1 Month to Study

Hi Everyone. Been lurking for awhile, I hate to ask, but I need to ask. I took a college course last semester (Fall 2013) that was geared toward the N+ Exam and helping the students pass. With that class I got a voucher for a free exam through CompTia. After that semester ended I had some family issues and could not devote enough time to study before the Spring 2014 semester started. That semester was quite booked and didn't have time to study as well. Probably just me being lazy. Since then I've toured and visited and talked with some local companies and friends in a NOC Networking environment. I'm not sure that s the direction I want to pursue anymore (no offense). I have sense decided I like the Informatics / Business or System Analyst position. The job postings and people I have spoke with regarding a Business Analyst make no mention of obtaining the N+ cert.

So my issue: my voucher expires I a month, and I didn't fully understand all the concepts during the course. I do know that I'm not taking the same test as someone paying through the website. Is it worth me to study hard for the next 20-30 days, if so, what material will be the best? I see a lot of people refer to the Messer videos online.

I say go for the certification, it discuss topics on troubleshooting, cabling and command-lines that would be very helpful. Also if you need a better general understanding on security, they cover the basics.

Yeah it's definitely worth it since you have a voucher you can't let it go to waste, so if you want to be quick about the whole process I recommend you download a copy of the Exam Objectives so you can be specific about what will appear in the exam. Professor Messer videos alone won't be enough at least add some reading material, Mike Meyer's Network+ is the most recommend book in these forums.

Keep in mind that the voucher is worth about $265 so I definitely recommend studying and taking the exam. I personally only studied for about a week although I also completed a cisco academy a couple years prior. I only used Lammle's Network+ study guide (CompTIA Network+ Study Guide Authorized Courseware: Exam N10-005: Todd Lammle: 9781118137550: Amazon.com: Books) which was straight to the point. I also recommend printing off the objectives and make sure you are comfortable with them prior to the test.

I'm reading his book right now. Does that huge table of cable types at the end of chapter 4 need to be memorized? He states that one needs to know them all for the exam. Prior to reading, I had zero networking knowledge or experience. Are the questions in the book comparable to the questions on the exam?
