I have the same problem as you. $58k for Tier 1 support for example is literally amazing, kudos all the way. Entry level developer, network admins, and systems engineer positions don't even always pay over that in the big city of Philadelphia. Truly amazing the disparity in salaries throughout this country.

Also depends on what industry you move into. It's not always about location.

I guess. I've interviewed for Desktop support positions ranging from 25k to as much as 40k. Financial firms, healthcare, construction company, sales etc. Market isn't as good here unfortunately.

Job market between NY and NJ for IT are drastically different last time I looked, which is pretty weird considering the proximity

You live absolutely no where near me...like we're talking a 3-4 hours difference here. My tri state area includes Delaware, not NY! Plus, we are talking about desktop support positions. I compared entry level salaries here to entry level salaries elsewhere, not higher positions which I couldn't vouch for how much they pay since I don't have one yet unfortunately. Glassdoor shows NYC has a much higher pay for these positions in general though which should give a general idea about your surrounding area. I don't have the skill set for recruiters to call me 10 times a week either, but who does when they are in their early 20s? That's why we're all here after all!

My first IT job was on a service desk, initially for an 8 week contract but eventually it became a full time job. At the start I was paid the princely sum of £350 a week, and this was paid out every Friday. When I started doing an hour OT each day that went up to £425 a week, which to a greenhorn kid just in to IT was great. Best bit was that because I was classed as contractor, this pay was 0% tax for the first couple of years. Managed to save up a tidy sum :)

Apologies for the delayed response; ~4 years to go from $58k to $115k (what I make currently).

Same. I've got 7 years left to try to get to $100k/year. I think it's do-able though. I have a plan anyways lol. I'm most concerned with getting to do what I want to do every day and fortunately the money goes with it (which is true for most people here I think)

    You got this!!

I hit my 6 figures last year. I wish I could shove it into my parents faces who always told me I would never amount to anything in life

That's awesome. I think the most interesting work is also the most compensated work (more responsibility though) so it's really a win-win. I think it's attainable for everyone, it's just going to take longer for some than others.

First Cert was Network+ in 2000. First IT job was part-time Helpdesk at a college. I think $6 or $6.50/hour.
Associates degree moved me to $15-30/hr range.
Bachelors moved me to $52k-115k/yr range
Also, created a start-up and pulled 7 figure revenue.
Quit my day job to invest more in myself and relationship.
Changing gears again to MSISA and something else. I'm 32 now.

Career changer from hospitality industry. Took a temporary job for $13.50 an hour right after I got my A+. Four months later, hired on in a different department for $39,500 with full benefits. Six months later I had my B.A. from WGU and moved up to a similar position in a different area for $45,000.

First IT job, $10 an hour as an intern. Now, enough to put set me kids up for school and my wife and I to retire properly.
