Is this Hyper-V you set these up on? For virtual machine environments host only normally means you can communicate with each other (the VMs) as well as the host. So this seems to be correctly configured. Can you ping the Gateway from one or both machines? Is the firewall on which could be blocking ICMP traffic by default?

Have you dropped the firewall? It's possible just the ICMP (IPv4) is being blocked.

Also, if the Win2k12 server is your DNS, change it's DNS to it's IP and not a localhost reference.

Just for reference, Server 2012 Non-R2 (RTM) doesn't allow itself to be pinged without manually allowing it, Server 2012 R2 allows pings to it.

Not sure why your Server 2012 server can't ping the Server 2008 server though. You need to provide more information.

Do you have 10.10.10.1 on the network as well?
Or does your server 2012 at 10.10.10.90 run DNS?
You can ignore entering default gateway and dns if they don't exist.
    Disable firewall.

Well you shouldn't turn off the firewall you will need it later... it's better to configure the firewall to ping the machine. I think if you do the sconfig command and under remote management you have an option for "allow ping" on the server.

Try turning that on and ping. If that doesn't work let me know I wrote down somewhere to create a firewall rule to allow ping. it's one of MS lab paper work they created for lab. I will try to find the info later on today
