Low Profile Graphics Card for my DELL Optiplex 760 SFF

Hi there. I've been looking for Low profile Video card for my Dell Optilplex 760 SFF, I wish to use it as my HTPC. I've used it for a couple of days, but the on board graphics is so terrible. I can't even play a HD videos without having the CPU overheat. Sometimes the Temp goes up to 90-100'C I've had issues where the PC would actually turn itself off because it overheats.

The only issue I have that most cards need a minimum of 300W of power but the PC I'm using only has 235W and I can't change it because this PC is SFF (Small Form Factor).

I Don't have the money right now to build or buy a new PC.

Is there any way of getting a video card within the spec of my PC?

I would suspect you didn't seat the CPU correctly with either not enough OR too much CPU thermal paste - solution: reseat the CPU.

Another possible problem might be the new processor you put in might be hotter than the heat-sink it is using can dissipate - solution: new heatsink.

But if it is that HD video is overheating the CPU then something like this should do the trick...

The CPU is correctly seated, I've used Arctic silver Thermal Paste. Also the CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo E7300. Ram is 4GB and HDD is 250GB. Also I can't replace the Heat sink because it's a Dell PC, and I can't get any other heatsink.

I've been looking at different cards, The only issue that I'm facing is the Power. My Power supply is only 235W. Would that be enough?

I think you should be OK power-wise with that card. Those passive GPUs don't use much electricity because they don't have great big fans on them to cool the whole lot down. They basically just use enough power to run HD video and stay cool.

If you want to be certain you are within the power supply limits then you'd need something like this.

I picked up an inexpensive Geforce gt 610 at best buy for my HTPC with a gig of memory and it is low profile, the card performs good in my system which is a gigabyte board with 8 gigs of memory and an E8600 Core Duo, running Win 7 64bit, the card has DVI, HDMI and VGA outputs, does not run hot and performs well enough to output HD to my HD TV, I also have a Blu-Ray burner in it to make my own blu rays for playing on other stuff in the house, for a cheap card, I paid like $50 for it, it works quite good, and it is low profile with the correct brackets included, I picked up about 6 months ago, so you might be able to find one floating around for less than $25 bucks now. It does say it requires 300W minimum, but I have not found that to be real with a card that does not even have a fan on it, of course my HTPC case has 5 fans in it, so everything stays quite cool.

Another thing to look at when looking at cards, make sure you know how much minimum graphics card power is required.

Yeah, it should work fine as long as you've got a low-profile bracket and of course it's in perfect working order. Seems a bit cheap but you may have bagged a bargain!
