I almost forgot...osxl. It was the best boot loader I have ever used. It is still around but too difficult to install unless you are really motivated.

Sinclair BASIC and later Minix is how I learned about operating systems. Also I liked Turbo PASCAL.

    XTree Gold

XTree - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Freakin' awesome

Oh... wow! I used that from DOS 3.3ish through Windows 3.11 and IIRC there was a crappy GUI version of it that had none of the soul the DOS version had. I remember thinking how pitiful Windows Explorer was... and by the time I started using Win 98 (I skipped 95) it either wouldn't run or it wasn't worth the trouble.

I used to work with one guy who was SO fixated on Xtree Gold, he had to carry a special boot disk around with it installed and had to boot from that. Back in those days, booting from alternate media (e.g. floppy) took forever. We tried to get him to use the command line to no avail.

As to my favorite "old" software:
    Lotus Write
    OS/2 Warp
    Paradox (DOS versions)
    QBASIC
some older versions of Word for the Mac
I'm sure others will come to me. Sometimes I miss IBM DisplayWrite, of all doggone things.
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Some great software being mentioned... I'll add my list:

    OS/2 2.1 then Warp
    QuickBasic 4.5
    PowerBASIC 3
    Turbo Pascal 7
    Delphi 1
    Qmodem 4.3
    SLMR (Silliy Little Mail Reader)
    MegaMail Reader
    RBBS with Maple Street mods
Enable -- word processor, spreadsheet, database, telecom that the Air Force used -- everyone complained about it but I loved it!

Oh, they were great days... but hard drive space was expensive and downloads were slow...

    Soundplant

Soundplant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's like a poor man's drum machine / mpc. It's extremely fun to cut bits of audio and make replay them with a keyboard stroke.

Who needs to spend a thousand dollars on a midi controller and a daw when you have this free for non-commercial use software.

Haha but seriously it's pretty fun and also "It has also been used as a sound design tool on the sets of the 2010 film Inception[9] and the BBC television series Doctor Who."

Enable? LOL! I completely forgot about that. Biggest pirated piece of software when I was in the AF! Would actually run off of floppy disks for those of us who couldn't afford pricey hard drives back then.

My old favorite word processor was Claris Works.

I also miss Gato, one of the most awesome games of all time.

Oh - speaking of games - I was addicted to Ultima II. One of my all time favourites.

    Other apps that I miss:

Wordperfect 4.2 - the 4.2 version remains my favourite word-processor. I still remember with Wordperfect 5.0 came out and hating it because it required 2 5.25" floppies to load instead of just one.

Quattro Pro for DOS - simple and fast

    Windows 8.1

It seems like it is getting the Me\Vista treatment unnecessarily. I absolutely love the OS since getting it and convinced my team when I worked at the school district to migrate to it. They are only putting Win 7 and Win Thin Client (thin 7) on old, or lab machines and moving everyone else over to 8.1.

Hopefully, 9 keeps the look and feel of 8.1, but adds the stupid start menu back for people missing it.

Lotus Notes for me. You want to talk about doing things the hard way. Lotus Notes was a study of how to do everything wrong... They even have a Fan Page!

I wouldn't know about how pirated it was, but it was one of the first software packages I bought for home. Enable had a military discount that made it easy to own legit, at least compared to programs like WordStar and WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3 and Quattro Pro, dBase and Paradox. I don't think I had even heard of Word, Excel, or Access back then.

Oh, and I remember running Enable off floppies, too! Five-and-a-quarters meant lots of disk swapping to get any serious work done. Those were the days. :)

IMO Command & Conquer was probably one of the best games ever made... I played so many hours on that game... The latest C&C 4 was a complete disaster but the rest of the series was superb.. i miss it, cause I can't play it... <sniff> icon_sad.gif

Ugh...WordStar! I remember using it back in 94/95. We had power issues at the site I was at and if you forgot to hit the right key combo, you'd lose everything! I couldn't tell you the number of reports I had to retype because of it.

As for games, I miss Aces of the Pacific and Road Rash for PC. Aces was a DOS game that was damn near perfect. Good times, good times!

Datawatch Monarch 10.5. Hands down the best non-OS software I've ever used.

OS - Windows 2K! Loved, loved, loved, win2k and would still use it if any relevant software would still run on it.

@Asif - You had a 486? Tee hee - I grew up using a 6502 clocking at a blazing @1Mhz. I made the huge mistake of throwing it out about a decade ago. I really miss that old antique.

@JibbaJabba - Your mention of Zak McCrakken really brought back memories - did you ever play Leisure Suit Larry? That was what my friends and I played. It was quite racy at the time.
