I sat for my exam today. (Saturdays are the best)
Passed with 947/1000!icon_cheers.gif

Operations of IP Data Networks
100%

LAN Switching Technologies
100%

IP Addressing IPv4 and IPv6
83%

IP Routing Technologies
100%

IP Services
100%

Network Device Security
63%

I spent the 2 months studying, but really had been skimming textbooks for 6 months.

Materials used:
  • Todd Lammle's CCENT Textbook
  • Wendel Odoms CCENT Textbook <--only for skimming and review after completing Lammle's. (different author's words help)
  • CBT Nuggets and some DanCourses(youtube)
  • ICND1 Series with Jeremy Cioara
  • ICND2 Series review of ICND1 with Jeremy Cioara (A GREAT REVIEW)
  • ICND1 Exam Walkthrough Series with Barker and Sequeira
  • Transcender Exams, For Dummies practice exams, repeat of textbook questions.
  • Packet Tracer before I got my lab
  • Home Lab
  • Hand Written Notes

Technique:
1. Watch Video with Jeremy
2. Read Chapter (will be easier because you watched video)
3. Write notes of relevant information.
4. LAB LAB LAB LAB LAB LAB LAB LAB SUBNET SUBNET SUBNET SUBNET SUBNET
5. Review videos and practice exams/chapter questions.

I will say, Labbing is the key to passing. Its the only way to get familiar with the IOS and the commands tested.
There is also no guessing on subnetting. You either know it or you don't.
I've compared both old and new ICND1 exam topics. This is probably twice as hard with much more material.

On to ICND2! Hopefully before the year's over. icon_study.gif

I would say 3-4 times minimum for each of the labbed topics.

    Make sure you lab:
    • IP Routing (static and dynamic)
    • OSPF (everything about this, very heavy topic. know ospf show commands)
    • Switch Configs and Port Security
    • VLANs, InterVLAN routing (ROAS, L3 Switch), Trunking
    • ACLs and NAT/PAT
    • IPv6/OSPFv3
    • Things like DHCP, passwords and basic configs should be easily remembered as you have to do them for the above.
There are many free lab exercise resources online if you look.
I believe "how to network" offers free labs. and so does freeccnaworkbook. Just apply labs to the relevant topics. some are old exam topics and you shouldnt worry about them.

Nice! Feels good, right? Man, I forgot about Dan's Courses when I was studying the ICND1/2 this time around, but I did run through most of his stuff last year when I was taking my networking classes for my Associates degree: he's friggin' awesome.

Thanks everyone. And just to note, I was able to subnet in about 3 seconds and STILL ended my exam with 2 minutes left! That is why you have to subnet super fast. I definitely suggest the Magic Number method that is described in the "Subnetting Made Easy" thread. Figuring out block sizes by subtracting the CIDR notations to find the power of 2 makes it such an easy task.
    (ex. Given /27, 32-27=5, 2^5=32 Block Size)

Danscourses are actually very easy to follow. I guess because he is actually a Cisco instructor at a college. He isn't as funny as Jeremy Cioara, but is definitely not boring like Chris Bryant!

I would definitely say time is against you. Learn to be quick. ICND2 has less time and the same number of questions as ICND1. I am not sure about the composite though but I'm almost certain it will be a big time crunch as well, if not more.

Also, I just interviewed at a place called Moss and Associates. All I could think about was Moss from the IT Crowd :)

    OH TOTALLY FORGOT TO MENTION!
Leaving Thursday for a WEEK in COSTA RICA!

    How's that for celebrating?

Back to the books as soon as I get back.
I have Lammle's ICND2 Book in the Mail! It should be waiting for me when I get back. Buy.com's ebay account is selling it for $27 shipped! Also selling the CCENT book for $15! I paid $25 on amazon icon_sad.gif
I personally cannot stand carrying the entire 2 part tome as a whole. I opted for individual parts!
I'm actually glad I found it for that cheap as the printed copy is not sold at many places online and if they do it costs more than the 2part book. Amazon only sells the ebook and Sybex states that it is "print to order". Strange.
