NightShade03 Member Posts: 1,383 ■■■■■■■□□□I wouldn't go to just sys admin meetups...go to anything that is common to what you want to do. System admins need to know networking, some ops work, security, possibly compliance needs (depending on the job). All of those are different fields or areas, but they tie back to being a system admin.
Time frames are hard to same. For some it happens within a few weeks and I know others that it took months for. You can also volunteer at non-profits / etc to help build experience too! -
izzyiz426 Member Posts: 58 ■■□□□□□□□□Interesting, are you apart of any meetups? How do you feel about Temp Agencies? Also I have been applying to contract computer company. They handle other organizations networks and computers. Im not sure because you do get a lot of experience with different technologies but nothing is stable as far as learning one thing is concerned?

snunez889 Member Posts: 238 ■■■□□□□□□□It took me about 6 months of really hardcore looking. I had another job in another field, so sometimes it was difficult to make some of the interviews. Best advice I heard here was to apply everwhere, even if they are asking for one or two years experince.

NightShade03 Member Posts: 1,383 ■■■■■■■□□□Yes I've been to meetups for various things (Cloud/Networking/Dev Ops/Programming). I have also been in the technical sales world for a few years now and have a ton of contacts that way as well.
I don't think there is anything wrong with temp agencies, but you do have to just make sure you a) stay on them and b) do your research for things they offer. Any job that builds experience is helpful. Working as a "temp" for 3yrs starts to raise some red flags (keep in mind a temp is very different from a freelancer).
Another piece of advice would be to post your resume on this site for review if you haven't already. The community here is great with comments and feedback. -
izzyiz426 Member Posts: 58 ■■□□□□□□□□Thank You very much for all your help. I really appreciate it. I was also thinking about applying out of state because its soo expensive. Also the salary is low for help desk. One more question, how long would you stay in a help desk roll before thinking of moving to jr sys or jr network engineer? Would you guys stay in new york as a college grad or move to a different state? Thanks again
