Upgrading cisco ios -- how difficult is it?

jelexyjelexy Member Posts: 31 ■■□□□□□□□□
Hi all,

I own two cisco 2620 router and practice on them for my ccna exam such as serial connection, password recovery, configuring interface etc etc.

I now want to upgrade the cisco ios on the router from version 12.0 to 12.3 or above

My question is - is it possible without having tftp server?

Thanks!

The TFTP software is really easy to install on a computer. Why not just use that? You can program another Cisco router to act as a TFTP server, but that is a bit overkill in this case. Are you having issues with the TFTP server installation?

You can download free TFTP server software for your computer here:

    http://www.solarwinds.net/Download-Tools.htm

Go to the bottom of the page to "Free Downloads". It works great.

i wouldn't use a 12.3 on a 2500, b/c it only comes in ip base and ip plus. inorder to do what you want i would look at 12.2(29) enterprise ed. ----plus it supports sub interfaces on e0 for inter-vlan routing and alot of other features

According to Cisco Software Advisor, there is no single image for the 2500 series router that will support everything you listed; however:

12.2(1d) will support VPN and Firewall Feature Set but not IPV6

12.3(17a) will support IPV6 but not VPN/Firewall Feature Set

Both of these require 16MB DRAM and 16MB flash.

does this means need at least 32mb?

No, but it means you need to check how much DRAM you have installed on your router and how much flash memory you have. You must have 16MB DRAM and 16MB flash, it's not a combined "total".

Do a "sh ver" on your router and it will tell you how much you have of each.

DRAM memory and flash memory are two different things.

ok so i am wrong..... icon_sad.gif my router shows 14336K/2048K bytes of memory

32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)

does this means i have only 14mb of flash memory and 2mb of dram?? i am getting confused here lolol thx ^^

Do you have a book? Lammle, Odom?? Cuz you need a book to get hold of the basics.

The 14336K/2048K is the DRAM (free/reserved by system). Your total DRAM is actually the combination of the two numbers 14338+2048=16384K or 16MB.

Hi 2lazy. Just curious, what made you decide to get into networking? You're the only person I've ever seen here with a programmers certification.
  • 2lazybutsmart2lazybutsmart Member Posts: 1,119
I used to work as a full time progammer one and half years ago but then I left that job for another one and now I do more networking than programming. I'm actually doing R&D stuff mainly but it's more focused on the networking part than programming.

Coding has cost me my eyes, my friend. I hate to wear glasses, but my doc tells me if I don't stop gawking at the screen 27 hours a day ( icon_rolleyes.gif ) I could end up not being able to read signs in an airport or stuff. So i've always been including a job-change on my secret wish list. It has finally happened even though I'm not making all the money I used to make in my previous job. There's this "spend spend spend" culture in places I used to work and 3K would be your monthly shopping expenses!!!!!!!!!!

About the issue of being the only person with a programming cert, I think there are many people on this site who are programmers. I see them all over the place. Some of them might not just be "Microsoft" programmers. But there certainly are plenty.
