Any linux mint experts on running vmware errors

Looking for anyone good with linux mint 17 that may of had complications installing vmware or virtualbox? I am unsure how to get many task running on my linux system as a newer user. Been a much harder task then what I am used to. Any suggestions? What are some good ways to get used to linux commands and installing more apps and virtual tools?
