Are the old CCENT CBT Nuggets video still ok to use?

SurferdudeHBSurferdudeHB Member Posts: 199 ■■■□□□□□□□
I'm still using the old CBT Nuggets for CCENT, they're over 5 years old. I understand the test has changed since then.

SHould use the new CBT Nuggets videos to study instead?

Conceptually, subjects covered aren't going to go "bad", the videos will just not cover everything in the most recent CCNA. My instructor told me that a CCNA exam now might be a CCNA and a good chunk of the CCNP from 5 years ago.

You can probably get something from the videos if they're all you've got. If you are able to, use the newer series. I wouldn't try to remember the commands in the older videos because the LabSims in the newer CCNA might have slightly different ones.

You'll learn from the videos, and could use them as a starting point. But you'd need to suplement them heavily w/ reading a more up-to-date book and labbing hard. A lot of topics got shuffled around in the latest revision of the CCENT/CCNA, so whereas the knowledge on the old CCENT videos would be an excellent learning experience, the topics no longer map well to the exam you'd take.

Fwiw I used the cbt nuggets videos almost as my only study source in conjunction with packet tracer and failed the first attempt. I don't think its enough.

I thought It would be as well, haven't took the test but after I picked up and started reading the Cisco Press book, I was amazed about how much detail was left out of CBT. Jeremy is great but spends too much time on non tech talking.

I am absolutely loving Chris Bryant CCNA bootcamp video available on Udemy. It is the full CCNA bootcamp but is broken up by ICND1 and ICND2.

Awesome stuff, he wastes no time. Only downfall is that you need to at least know what is going on because he goes straight into the stuff you need to know rather than introducing the basics

CBT nuggets doesn't seem to be geared at being the only source of study for an exam. I use it more as a primer - blitz thru the videos at the beginning of picking up a topic so that I have a blueprint of the exam and some familiarity w/ the topics. Then when i go to start reading and deep diving, the process is easier because I've already been exposed to all the topics and can easily follow along. CBT Nuggets bridges the learnign curve for me.

My understanding is the current ICND1 (2013-Present) covers most of the stuff from the old ICND1 (2007-2013), except Wireless, RIPv2, and VTP...PLUS a good chunk of the old ICND2 (2007-2013). I would suggest not using CBT Nuggets as your only training. But, there's no real reason you can't use the old videos as a supplement for Odom's or Lammle's book.

Just bear in mind that statements like "X is not supported on IOS/Cisco Switches/Cisco Routers at this time" may no longer be accurate. A perfect example of this is CCNP: SWITCH where the materials for the current/old exam (ends Jan. 2015) all state that VTPv3 is not supported on IOS. This is no longer correct, as Cisco has begun supporting VTPv3 in more recent relases of IOS. That said, I doubt Cisco will ever try to pull a Microsoft and expect you to remember the exact version and edition that is required for a specific feature.

I would not suggest using the old videos. They will teach you some things but they are out of date and might actually cause more questions then answers.

Also definately do not use them as your only resource. Videos are great for introduction to topics. You will need to read and lab to really learn the information unless you know it already and are just doing a test prep.

Thx all. Yeah I'm using the Cisco and Lammle books in addition along with packet tracer.

I'll probably try out the new CBT Nuggerts.
