Is it necessary to know Linux for CCNP Voice?

Guys, I've noticed that all Unified platforms such as CUCM, CUP, CUC and etc are Linux-oriented. Does it mean that in order to master CCNP Voice should also master Linux OS?

No, its not required. While the Unified Platforms sit on top of RedHat Linux, there is no direct access to Linux (though I'm sure there are hacks out there). Cisco do provide a command line environment for what it wants to let you access.

Yeah you don't need to know Linux at all really - I believe it's all protected from the user anyway in a real environment.

to master CCNP voice you got to read and practice a lot. As far as I know, Linux command line is restricted to TAC only and is not covered in any voice exam.

Guys, I imagine that I probably confused you all. I mean whether I need to know Linux no matter partially or entirely in order to install Cisco Unified platforms which are Linux-oriented.

My sales engineer has always been there to hold my hand through the process, but there really is very little to the install process. Linux skills are not needed.

no you don't need linux skills to be good in voice, they do come in handy, but the majority of the time you will pick it up pretty fast as you go. Of course if you destroy the database, or things like that the TAC engineers that fix it(i'm talking about when they root into the system) will know quite a bit of linux, but unless you plan on going to to work at TAC you can do without it. I would suggest learning python or java so you can write your own voice apps to automate your day to day life. Nothing like being able to build a new site in some python code(still haven't mastered this yet) vs doing it all the manual way.

Yeah not required, the install isn't like installing a linux os or config it.

VMware is far more useful knowledge than Linux in the Cisco Voice realm these days. Only TAC can access the Linux shell so unless you're planning on joining TAC you would probably be better served spending your time studying VMWare ESXi and whatnot.

So if you were going to look at doing a VMWare cert, which would be the best track to pick to compliment a voice role? Data center, network virtualization?

I'm currently reading CIPT1 and it specifically mentions you do not need to know linux. Copied and pasted directly from book:

*The appliance-based model makes it possible for an administrator to install, implement, and manage a CUCM server without requiring any knowledge of the underlying Linux-based operating system.
