First Resume - Nervous

I haven't given myself a formal introduction but my name is Andre, 21 years old currently at a local community college in my area for criminal justice, however did some thinking during the time I was in Portugal and decided to pursue a career in the IT realm of this world. I devoted alot of time to self studying with the Exam Cram book and the Professor Messer videos, I am feeling extremely confident on passing the 802 exam that I am planning during winter break. Anyway now to the jobs... I currently work at Staples as a "Certified Tech" and there is really not much tech work involved at all, just your average retail job. However it does give me experience dealing with people as i feel IT involves alot of communication. But talking to some family members who work for a big insurance company based in Mass (Mass Mutual) I have created a resume to submit... Here it is never done this before

This is what I would do, first and foremost read the resume thread, it has some very useful knowledge. Some specifics, remove objective section and replace it with Summary. Remove the parenthesis from the degree. Remove career outline section. List company under work experience starting with the most recent first. Remove the period on the first bullet. Remove dual citizenship. Emphasize what you've done that's IT related instead of worked on them for staples and at home. Implement a soho, troubleshoot with ping/tracert, things like that. Move A+ to a certification section. Also phone number looks a bit out of place.

Then spend some time thinking if staples or your personal experience has been a bigger benefit on the position you seek. If it's staples structure it like: Summary, Experience, Certification, Education, Skills. If your personal experience structure it like: Summary of skills, Certification, Education, Skills, Experience. Summary of skills is a brief overview of your skills. The goal is to put your biggest assets closest to the top.

Good luck on your 802, the exam cram book was great I thought and good luck on the job search.

If that's your actual personal info at the top of the resume, then I recommend scrubbing this info immediately. Never post your personal info on a public forum like that.

Your name at the top of the resume should stand out more than this. Use a larger font and bold the text.

The resume formatting needs some work. There is too much spacing in some areas and not enough spacing in other areas. Your indentations are not even. This looks like it was quickly thrown together.

Like techfiend stated, objective sections are outdated and no longer recommended. Instead, you should incorporate a professional summary section. I will link you to an example at the bottom of this post. Objectives are implied and redundant.

I also agree that the A+ cert needs its own "Certifications" section underneath the Education section.

Within the work experience section, each job description should begin with a high-level overview of your daily duties and responsibilities, and then use bullets to highlight special achievements, projects, promotions, etc. Don't rely solely on bullets like this.

The "Career Outline" section doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose. This information needs to be incorporated into your work history, and then this section should be deleted.

Again, move the A+ cert out of the Additional Skills section. Also, the line "Working on computer repairs...from home" sounds like a bit of fluff. For the most part, a resume should be kept to professional experience. Your main goal right now should be landing that first helpdesk position and begin accruing some useful professional experience. Also, I would highly recommend you pursue a bachelors degree in IT once you complete your AAS degree. That should open up many doors for you. After that, work on certs related to your chosen career path. (Cisco, Microsoft, etc)
