Very much newbie questions.sorry. I did try finding the answer by speaking to colleagues but couldn't shed any light on it.

need some help understanding what IOS versions do what and deciphering what the codes mean. for example, I have c3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin which when i run show version gives me

filename: c3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin

R2#show version
Cisco IOS Software, 3600 Software (C3640-JK9S-M), Version 12.4(16), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

can anyone tell me what the JK9S-M means? and what (16) refers to? i assume 12.4 is the major release value
is this a good IOS version to use?

I also have:
filename: C2691-AD.BIN
R1#show version
Cisco IOS Software, 2600 Software (C2691-ADVENTERPRISEK9-M), Version 12.4(23), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

R3#show version
Cisco IOS Software, 3700 Software (C3725-ADVENTERPRISEK9-M), Version 12.4(15)T5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc4)

what does the T5 mean? what is adventerpriseK9-M?

OK?
or would something like c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-7 be better. if so why?

are there any IOS versions which support EIGRP IPv6?

thanks
