Relevant Experience

doublehunterdoublehunter Member Posts: 59 ■■■□□□□□□□
Help desk specialist transitioning to a desktop support. But I can only get 6 months of experience on desktop because I am planning to go to a different country second half next year. Question is, is it okay to have just 6 months of experience in a desktop support role or won't really be considered as experience? As they mentioned, minimum experience must be 1 year relevant experience in the related field. So I am wondering if it's worth the risk getting lower pay on desktop support role just to gain experience that will be considered. Did I make sense? Thank you TE! Happy holidays!

6 months of typical desktop support duties would look better on a resume then 6 more months of help desk to most future employers. You have to determine if the lower pay would is acceptable.

Both desktop support and helpdesk are relevant experience in a related field. The fact that you're already doing desktop support is better than not doing it, but generally even helpdesk experience is good. The lower pay depends on you and whether you can live/survive on it.

In 6 months you will be exposed to the most common of issues, after that is is usually rinse and repeat.

I enjoy field work than just sitting in a desk answering phone calls that's why Im dying to get out of helpdesk role. I wanna get hands on experience on servers and routers rather than just remotely rebooting them. I enjoy the role but I feel like I'm not learning and wants new challenges. So limited experience is good than no experience at all? Even just for 6months?

Indeed doublehunter. Any IT experience from 6 months and beyond looks good on your resume. That amount of experience is considerable.

I worked for a heldpesk in a medium sized company for about 8 months before transitioning to a Desktop Support/Jr. System Admin role with a US State Government.

The transition from helpdesk to Desktop Support, i.e. field work was and still is quite refreshing. You won't miss your desk much.

Another factor that will help you get out of HelpDesk is education and/or certifications. Those (along with your experience) will help your resume stay on top of the "resume pile", so to speak. Also, the material you learn through seeking those certifications is extremely helpful and grows your overall IT knowledge base.
