Hey guys so I being working in IT

close to 5 years now.

im glad I made it this far and I can defenately see the next 5 years panned out and what I want to be doing.

I started as a intern and moved my way up in different companies and unfortunately I became unemployed two months ago.

In my last company I was a cloud consultant which specialised in google apps and identity and access management which was a pure prject role. im very happy with how I built up my career from nothing without help and I must admit it was a great challenge.

I have being offered a role of a 80k package its awsome considering in my area the average salary is 40k

how ever they have to run a very huge reference check if it clears out all good.

if I dont get it then I have to keep hunting and there was also another verbal offer. If that does not work out ill have to keep hunting.

I want to know where yall were when the 5 year mark came.

I am a mcitp ea gonna upgrade to mcse 2012.

Gosh I hope I find something soon.

Well, I passed my 5 year mark in June, and I'm doing IT Support. I did 4 years of part-time IT Support while I was going to community college full-time. Then I switched to online college and have been doing about 1.5 years of full-time IT Support. I've mainly been in support because I didn't really know which direction I wanted to go in, but I've finally figured it out. I'd like to get into a Business Analyst role as I believe that would make me the happiest and it's the most interesting to me. I thought about Systems Administration, but my personality and my heart say Business Analyst as I'm more of a people person.

I'll be praying for you and hoping that you get the job. You seem to have some great experience.

Dont compare yourself to others. Set a goal for a year from now and compare yourself to that goal. Big goals = big results.

If we're talking about full-time experience, I just hit the five year mark. First job out of college was a UNIX system admin/engineer for a large aerospace defense company.

I left 2.5 years later for a ~63% raise to basically do the same thing for a casino resort in the area. About 1.5 years after that, I also found myself unemployed due to outsourcing efforts and the elimination of the environment I supported.

That lasted just under a month where I accepted a position doing the same thing for a regional health insurance provider for around a 20% salary increase. I have been here for about a year and am very happy where I'm at.

I have a handful of Linux certs, though most are outdated and none of my employers really cared much about them or my master's degree (paid for by the first job). They seemed to really just care about my work history and skillset.

there are like two other threads that are similar to what your asking for where a lot of people replied ...I will see if I can hunt them down...

    Edit:

In my 7th year in IT, and I can't say that I'm happy with my career. Started out with Solaris, supporting everything including servers (hardware), storage, san, backup,..etc and then forced to move to Linux and had to learn few new tools, but I can see that this career isn't for me anymore, I just lost the passion.

    Money-wise, it's great.

Started my 4th year in IT few months ago. Currently working as a Senior Consultant. Boss recommended me for a promotion to Consulting Architect early next year. Hopefully I can get past the promotion board.

As for salary, not quite Obama millionaire. I figure I'll hit that milestone next year or the year after.

they let us leave early, not sure when. How about lunch whenever they let us leave if you're still in the city ? :)
