So I got his down pat the upgrade order is:

1) vCenter
2) VUM
3) ESXi hosts
4) VM's
5) VMware Tools

Am I forgetting anything?

1) Backups software
2) vCenter
3) VUM
4) ESXi hosts
5) VM's
6) VMware Tools
7) VM hardware

VMFS upgrade (if applicable)

I learned the 'backups software upgrade' the hard way once!

Apart from the port number KBA, I find this one of my most used (Probably should remember all now) VMware KB: Update sequence for vSphere 5.5 and its compatible VMware products

Well I just upgraded literally almost 9 months after this post to 6.0.0 from 5.5.0 following this upgrade process. Not much has changed.

It is indeed a good one. One thing I have yet to find out is the reasoning behind the vShield Edge upgrade so late in the sequence. Given that Edges are sometimes upgraded automatically through redeployment in vCD.
