Looking to move to Atlanta

DoubleNNsDoubleNNs Member Posts: 2,015 ■■■■■□□□□□
Currently live in New Jersey and thinking of making the move down south. Not too sure the easiest way to try to land a job when I'm so far away.

Is anyone aware of any openings in Atlanta? Have contact info for any dependable IT recruiters? Know of any companies located there that I should check out?

I have 2 years of IT experience and currently work in a Datacenter. My certs are listed to the side, but I unfortunately haven't used much of my CCNA other than a handful of show commands on Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and Brocade network equipment - haven't had the oppurtunity to configure anything or troubleshoot too many networking issues, so my CCNA skills/knowledge are incredibly rusty (but I'm positive I can brush up). I'm comfortable on the command line using Linux/Unix. Although I don't have *nix sys admin experience/skills (yet) I am a novice at bash shell and Python scripting.

I'm mostly looking for a junior level Networking/*nix position where I could potentially advance to mid-level admin.

Feel free to PM me or respond here in the thread. Any suggestions are welcome. Whether it's tips on moving, tips on applying for jobs in another state, stats on the job market in Atlanta, or info about specific positions.

Thanks.

Funny you post this as I will be making this move as well myself late this Summer from Chicago. I've checked CL for jobs with not too much showing, but I did mange to go on Dice and see some things that caught my eye. I'm hoping when its time for me to go that maybe I can land some Skype interviews or get companies to maybe even fly me in for interviews. Otherwise, I may go with an agency till I get established out there and then go from there. I wish you the best on your potential journey and much blessings.

I strongly suggest that you find a job first. Try dice.com, monster, or linkedin because they're really your best bet. Do you have a bachelor's degree? I may have a position open with my company. PM me your resume.

My company has security positions but if you're serious, I have a recruiter who can help.

    Also, check out http://www.reddit.com/r/atljobs/new

@coreyb - thanks for the luck. If we both end up down there, we should meet up for a beer. icon_thumright.gif

@broli - unfortunately, no I don't have a college degree, which will undoubtedly make the search harder. I have some college coursework completed however, and plan to enroll in WGU at some point to finish up. I'll touch up my resume and PM it to you after work today.

@sephstorm - I might be a little entry-level for a security position. My current position hasn't been as technical as I'd hoped it would be. But any help would be appreciated.

I'm planning on making the move late March.

Any chance for relocation packages with any of the Atlanta jobs? (doubtful) In TN at the moment, but I'd love to live in/near ATL and do some Network Security. icon_cry.gif

Unfortunately you would need a degree or at least 8 years of experience to qualify. I'll keep my eyes open for anything else just in case.

I'd move to Atlanta if I didn't have family and friends keeping me in Florida. We have good friends that live near there (Dallas) and it's beautiful up there. Commute in sucks, but there's a ton of opportunities there.

A few months ago I was going to move to Atlanta, talked to a recruiter the money was alight qualified for the position and all. The hiring manager picked a local candidate. More than once I have been turned down for jobs out of state because I wasn't local Atlanta is one example. I had a lady tell me its risky with out of state applicants because you wait for them then at the last minute they pull out. After telling one person I would move at my own expense he called back and asked the same question a few days later. I do wish you the best and have my fingers crossed for you. I am sure you'll find a good position. For my one bad story 5 good stories exist. Just needed to vent

I don't know of any current openings here, but hit me up if you come down and we can grab a beer!

Also, consider looking at Google. Since they just announced Google Fiber here officially, I'm sure they'll have all sorts of positions opening up soon.

I might have something for you. will PM. But if you could find a job that has locations here and in ATL. You might be able to find a job here, then ask to be relocated. Sometimes, doing that they will pay those expenses, and you may even keep your salary while moving to the lower COL location.

Consider some of the suburbs north of the city. I live and work in Alpharetta and there are lots of opportunities here. Roswell is also a dynamic area with a lot of growth. PM me with any specific questions that you may have on the area. You'll have questions and you move along and I'd be happy to answer them. It helps a lot when trying to re-establish yourself!

Don't have any advice for you, but I hope the search goes well.

I also have plans to go to atlanta area, especially with my wife nearly done with her master's in Epidemiology.

As far as I've researched, Atlanta has the best combination of job market, salary, cost of living, and quality of life. Especially for IT and Public Health.
