I'm going to be up there anyways for another business trip. I'm tempted to grab an expo pass and just check it out

It's that time of year again where I spend a day or two at the expo and get DDoSed by marketing froth from all directions. So much Cyber and NextGen and whatever other nonsense along with all the large booth screens displaying terminal sessions with "action text" (green on black background, of course). Every vendor tries to out-do each other with multi-level booths, lots of screens, banners galore, and booth babes. Wait ... I meant "frontline brand management consultants."

There's some good stuff out there for sure and it's interesting to see how vendors are taking things one step further, but there's also a lot dog-and-pony (or should I say "dog-and-pwnie"?) shows with mostly helium content that you just have to grin at the snake oil and provide obligatory knods. But oh, look - free t-shirts and flashing things! Just let them scan your conference badge!

RSAC is a great place to soak in the industry trends, collect brochures, talk to sales engineers, get free stuff, exchange business cards, and then sort out the mess later. It's like window shopping in a great big CyberSecurity Mall where you can see, touch, and ask questions even if in reality your budget is zero. Within hours after it all ends, the inbox starts filling up with the expected, "...reaching out to see if would like to discuss any future plans your organization has regarding internal security efforts." Just play the game, learn new things, and get free munchies at the larger booths.

    I suspect I'm jaded a bit.
