Career path in Network Security

hi all.
I'm looking to further my IT career in Network security. Can anyone recommend a set of certifications starting out in this field?. I have been doing general IT helpdesk for the past 4years and have a growing interest in Network security.
I would also like to know if it is advantageous to develop different programing languages..

I have since started looking into ISC2, Security+ and CISM. Is this a good baseline or can anyone recommend anything to help? I have a few CBT nuggets vids to help also.

Any suggestions, much appreciated

Get your Security+ cert. It will expose you to valuable and broad IT security knowledge.

You don't need any programming. Just know how networks work. You might want to get a cert like Cisco, or Network+. I got may bachelors in IS and got an internship into network security with only my degree and a security+ cert but they wanted me to get a vendor cert too so I chose Microsoft. But in the interview they were mostly interested in the fact that I knew about ports and protocols and basic networking knowledge, which I had learned in school.

Security+ will bring you up to speed with general security knowledge. From there you'll need to decide which branch of security to pursue. The different areas are many and varied. You could be a security analyst in a SOC r a network security engineer responsible for the firewall/IPS/AV/etc. or a penetration tester or a compliance/audit guy or one of the many other security positions out there.

Thanks...looking into Security+ now..
..turns out i need to brush up on my networking skills a little. (Network+ was a breeze through)...may also look into MTA (for extra help)
got some training vids and a VM lab setup to get me started
