Applied Computer Science vs Computer Science

Good Day, I am looking at pursuing a degree in Computer Science. I was mainly looking at online colleges since I have a job already (defense contractor). I am a veteran so my GI bill basically covers everything. My question is does anyone know any major difference in Applied Computer Science vs Computer Science in the eyes of employers or in general. So far I only saw less general ed requirements as with an A.A.S degree. I have been looking at Troy University and UMUC since they have shorter terms. am not a big fan of 16 week semesters since it would slow down my degree progress since I wouldn't be able to handle a full course load (4 classes). Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks. :)troy.edu - Undergraduate Catalog/College of Arts and Sciences Online Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science | UMUC

From my understanding Computer Science kind of branched out of mathematics, and Calculus is a prerequisite.
I personally find Applied Computer Science more interesting.

Honestly, unless you were working for a university or perhaps a company doing research work any other company won't care. Applied CS vs CS is really just is applied is exactly what it sounds like, applying computer science to real problems. I'd really equate it to software engineering, you're working on real problems and the course work is geared towards that. Computer Science will deal in the theoretical side of the house. So software defined networking came out of Computer Science. The topics will often lead to becoming applied and at some point it was merely an idea of something.

Thanks, that's along the lines of what I was thinking. Also congrats on Dakota State is a great school. I did a semester there and the professors are great.

Thanks! I'm excited to get started. Sent it my "yes I am going to attend letter" and contacted my advisor who got back to me quickly so off to a good start. If you don't mind me asking, why only one semester?

I graduated from an "Applied Science" institute in my country. A couple of years later, I'm grateful that I had tons of computer science and math labs, compared to my friends from a less "hands-on" university.

@the_Grinch: I received a pretty nice job offer and it would have been hard to take 15 credits and work full time. I am finishing up my 2nd semester online with digital forensics and a computer science class before I switch schools. @ccnpninga: The hands-on approach seems to be better to me as well
