Linux Essentials Before LPIC-1?

orlandoflorlandofl Member Posts: 216 ■■■□□□□□□□
** I Posted This in the LPI section, it didn't get any responses. I thought I would try to get some feed back here*

Hello all!

I just wanted to get some feedback from those that have taken LPIC-1 recently. I don’t have any professional experience with Linux. I’ve installed and messed around a bit with Ubuntu and Linux Mint…a couple of commands..and well…you get the picture. I’d really like to learn CentOS, Red Hat, and SUSE server OS’s and be able to find employment as a Jr. Linux Admin here in central FL.

I’m wondering if Linux Essentials is worth doing, or whether I should just jump into LPIC-1. I would do the essentials course onlinuxacademy.com, but not actually sit for the exam. While I don’t want to get over my head, I also don’t want to waste any study time if it’s not needed.. Correct me if I’m wrong, but prior to Linux Essentials LPIC-1 was the entry level certification, so I question the need/merit of the essentials exam. After LPIC-1 I plan on doing RHCSA, then LPIC-2. I appreciate all feedback.

    Skip Essentials.

Feel free to do the course. I actually recommend the book "The Linux Command Line."

I'm in the middle of the Linux+ right now and I'm realizing that once you get the basics down, the material itself is very easy - just takes a while to get thru and memorize it all.

It seems the ROI of the Linux+ is small enough as it is.. I can't imagine the Linux Essentials cert having any ROI at all.

Thank you for a reply! icon_cheers.gif

I'm thinking i'll probably do the essentials course just to fill in gaps, I have no plans to sit for the exam. I honestly don't have any professional experience with Linux at all, it just interests me and i think essentials might help me understand things quicker. I think your right about LPIC-1 not really having an ROI. I'm more or less doing it as a foundational course and precursor to my ultimate goal, RHCSA.

I'm assuming your talking about this book:
Amazon.com: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction (9781593273897): William E. Shotts Jr.: Books

I have it on the way from Amazon. It's got great reviews and I've heard people around TE speak highly of it as well.

Once again thanks for your response...I was beginning to think i had been shunned!

Same here...It's starting to "click" with me....but its a LOT of material....

I thought about taking L.E. but why? You get 3 in 1.....That alone is worth it.
