What is the deal with electives

I noticed some people talking about using certs as electives. Explain this "elective" thing please.

the way i understand it is that you have the core exams, of which you have to do all, and the electives of which you select a certain amount out of a larger pool - say two exams out of four

Depending on which track you're on, certain other certifications such as A+ combined with Network+ or Security+ can be used as electives to meet the elective requirements for either your MSCA or MCSE and others.
