Is 98-365 worth taking?

To me most of the MTA exams seem to have very little use, but the Server Fundamentals on looks like it might be a good primer before going for a Windows 8.1 and 2012 MCSA. My server experience is limited to what I have played around with at home and the typical Help Desk stuff, password reset move a user or computer in AD. So with that in mind, is it worth taking just to jump start into the MCSA?

I'm due to sit the exam in a few weeks, like yourself I had no previous Server experience. I've certainly learned a lot from it. So as a bridging to higher certs I would say it's worth while. I've seen it mentioned a lot of times on this forum that it's the most difficult of the MTA's.

Windows server administration by Tom Carpenter, Windows Server Administration Fundamentals and pluralsight videos. CBT nuggets isn't very good for the course.

The MTA exams are worthless. The only reason why I took mine last year was because it was eligible for MCP certification/status. Now Microsoft has changed it so you can't get your MCP with taking the MTA exams. You are better off taking you money and pursuing the MCTS certification as you will then get your MCP certification.

I paid 40$ for the MTA server admin essentials book, read through it, build a windows server vm and did the exercises but that's as far as I would go. It's decent knowledge if you don't have server experience or want basic server knowledge but I wouldn't actually pay for the test.

It's only worthless in certain people's eyes. My new job wants me to get a cert, so I decided to go with the MTA. OP, it's definitely not worthless. It's only 100 bucks for a cert that you can put on your resume. The Tom Carpenter book is what I ordered, here is the link. Yes, it's worth taking. I'm taking the 98-349 sometime this week, and with it being only $65, it's well worth it. I need it to get into WGU to start their IT degree. Not to mention, it's one more thing you can throw on a resume. Will it mean anything when you have other, better, certifications? No, of course not, but it's a good start for anyone looking to get into the field.

I wouldn't pay full price for it if you are planning on pursuing higher level Microsoft server certs. Almost no ROI on it, and it won't really prepare you for the Server 2012 exams other than introducing you to the testing format.
