    Can Guest1 ping guest2?
    Can Guest2 ping guest1?
    Firewall disabled on both guests?
    Can either ping Gateway?
Subnet mask set correctly on guests?

    disabled firewall did the trick.
    Guest 1 can ping Guest2
    Guest2 can ping Guest1.
    Both can ping the gateway.
    yeah subnet mask setup correct.
previous i had firewall on on both guest and was able to ping guest1/guest2 both okay.

in a real world env, is the firewall turned off on vmguest?

    thanks a lot

You mostly treat a virtual server the same way as a physical server, there are some options to do firewall or anti virus on VMware level (NSX provides a distributed firewall for example) but if you don't have that, secure and patch a virtual server the same way as you would a physical.
