WGU Suggestions

I'm considering going to WGU, but I'm trying to get some of the certs before transferring in.

I'm wondering if anyone has transferred most if not all the certs into WGU?
I was going to get up to CCNA:Securty and was wondering if anyone has taken the CIW certs to transfer in?

I transferred in many certifications when I started at WGU including: CompTIA, Cisco, and Microsoft certs. I still had to take tests for CIW and currently CCNA: Security but that's about it as far as certification based classes. ;)

Don't worry about the CIW certs. I think the consensus is they have little value, just like the Microsoft MTA certs. I bet most of us never even heard of them prior to WGU.

Just take what you need to qualify for enrollment.

You can actually transfer most valid IT certs, including CIW and MTA certs. I've been in WGU since 2013 and I almost didn't get accepted at the time I wanted to because I didn't have any certs that were less than 5 years old. I got in based on my current employment and experience on the job, but CIW and MTA certs were on the list of options they were showing me to possibly take on my own before enrolling at WGU in case the admins didn't accept my experience at the time. I heard WGU was cutting out some of the entry level CIW and MTA certs from their IT curriculum but may still accept them to transfer in.
I just checked and WGU is still offering CIW Database Design Specialist, CIW JavaScript Specialist certs in the IT - Software degree, which I think are good certs for fundamental knowledge and won't consider them worthless.

Unless you're having your employer pay for them, I wouldn't bother. WGU will provide all the learning materials and two shots at the exam included in the tuition. That saves some serious coin when you look at the training materials and the exam vouchers. Honestly, the number of certifications that were included was a big factor in my deciding to go there. Unfortunately it looks like a lot of them have been dropped from the program (I'm guessing they're starting to realize the cost/benefit ratio for them isn't as high as they were hoping.) But I wouldn't put it off just to be able to transfer in the certs.

Actually that is the exactly what it is. My company pays for the test costs, so I'm considering getting as many certs before transferring in, so minimize the time for graduation.

Do they pay for study materials though? Unless you're torrenting them, you're going to have to pay for them whereas at WGU, they provide that too.
