Job Quandry: What will progress my career fastest?

For the last 3 months, I have been working with a company doing asset inventory. The company I work for told me that my next project would be more hands on/tech troubleshooting stuff. Well, yesterday I found out that the only placement they have for me is another 3 month inventory project. The project is slated to start on Monday.

I have been contacted by multiple recruiters for some new opportunities- call center and help desk type things. I have a very promising interview with IBM tomorrow as well as a meeting with a recruiter from Robert Half. Although the company I currently work for just landed a major contract with a huge health care organization and EVENTUALLY could slide me into something better, it won't happen now.

I didn't feel like it was fair for me to start the project and then jump ship when I land something better. My boss is trying to convince me to stay with the company- they really like me. He says the opportunities will be endless and really allow me to grow my resume. But- I also know he is trying everything he can to get me to stay. I just feel that doing another 3 month inventory gig will do nothing for my career. I take my final A+ exam next Wednesday and it is already opening up doors for me.

What should I do? Do I stay with a company that has a lot of potential down the road to slide me into a better role, or do I start looking now for something better? Note: My husband makes a decent salary so I can be picky with pay.

Set an expectation with your boss. Tell him that you want more IT focused work after you get your A+. If they don't make that happen, put your A+ skills to use elsewhere. I'm sure you could find a help desk job somewhere else, you seem nice enough from your posts here :).

They already told you your next job would be more technical, and it wasn't. Why should you believe your manager, who claims there are endless possibilities for you there? I say keep looking for something else.

I feel to a certain extent that some employers don't move employees up or around is because said employee is doing a terrific job in their current role.

Management may not want to or be able to find a suitable candidate for the spot you vacate.

Go to the other interviews..see what happens..if you are offered something, then you go to the boss and ask him what is going on. If you don't like the answer, go with the best job that can use your talent. Obviously, your present job/boss isn't doing that.

Go with what is helping you now, not promises of maybe helping you down the road.

You guys are reaffirming what I thought, too. Thanks for the insight. I think I am being swayed by my boss because he is a genuinely nice guy and I know I am putting them in a bit of a pickle. But I have to remember that this if MY life.

It's just business. I'm sure he'd feel bad for firing you, but again, it's business nothing personal.

Your boss doesn't sound like he's that great of a friend to you. If he really liked you what he would do would be to inconvenience himself in the short term in order to help you grow in your career and create a more valuable asset in someone that is capable and appreciative of the opportunity given.

Instead, what it sounds like they are doing is letting someone who is enthusiastic and interested in growth stagnate in a role that doesn't lead to much more then what they're already doing. Forever. Put your resume out there and good luck! I think that you'll be doing something much more interesting in a VERY short amount of time!
