Open Source Backup Software

Hello,

So I literally had no idea the wide array of open source backup solution on the market. I was curious if anyone here uses a Open Source Backup solution that is good with VMware as-well as bare metal backups along with the normal hot/cold data backups of data.

We currently use BE 12.5 (so want to go away from it) and Dell AppAssure, but a 3rd layer on backups would be nice.

PS: tied into another thread I made, I won the battle, he did some research at home last night and realized what I said was actually right.... who would have thought? O.o

I would be interested in this too. I would like to add an extremely cheap backup solution at my current job.

I don't like the sound of extremely cheap backup solution.

Extremely cheap is relative. Done tons of research and Datto is $15k+, Acronis is $8k+, Veaam is also $8k+, they all want a piece of the per-VM pie count and I understand that's the industry standard but there pricing is freaking insane. AppAssure was cheap when we got it, @ $3.5k and it works fine but we want a third layer of backups.

I ended up finding a open Source solution over @ Bacula Systems and they have a very low pricing scheme and their features are very rich.

Veaam used to have a free version for VMs within the last year.

If a company wants to cheap out on their backup system and won't give you money for something credible, I'd suggest drafting a document letting them know you will follow their instructions to get a cheap or free solution, but if something goes awry that there is limited or no support so you can offer no guarantee of the safety of their data, there needs to be a higher up manager who will sign off to take responsibility

You can easily lose your job over a screw up with backups.

Idera / r1soft is about 7/mo per agent. 5.95/mo if you buy 50 or more. It's pretty reliable on Linux and useable on windows once you work through all the vss issues.
