So excited! It's a 6 month contract working for IBM at Best Buy headquarters. I will be helping troubleshoot computers for the upcoming holiday season. $16/hr, a lot of training, and really fun work atmosphere.
Not too shabby considering I decided to go into IT 5 months ago!

The resume will be shinning when you put IBM on it. those $16 will become $24 few roles down the road and then 34 and so on.
Congratulations! -

Hows the interview for the IBM help desk position? Do you mind sharing some experiences and what type of questions, like is it more technical questions or just the regular interview questions? I'm going to interview there next week. It's going to be my first IT job also and excited! -

Holy cow - I'm impressed. I decided on IT about a month ago and started studying A+. I'm so excited for you. Similar background, BS in Criminal Justice and previously was a child abuse investigator. -

bloodshotbetty Member Posts: 215I was asked a few technical questions, but mostly they just wanted to get a feel for my soft skills. The thing is is that I work for Experis, contracted to IBM, and then contracted out to Best Buy Corporate. So I essentially met with the team leads to get a feel for the position. I don't know how similar it will be to an actual interview at IBM. I was told by the team lead that they look for soft skills and the ability to work as a team over anything else. They can teach the technical stuff. Good luck to you!

I kind of put A+ on hold and picked up Network+. I began to feel myself drowning in technical terms and basically became overwhelmed. I am however enjoying reading Network+. I really can keep up with the information and it all seems to make sense. It is almost as if A+ just didn't click. I am sure that it will soon enough, but I am focusing on Network+ for now. Crazy? Is it necessary to have A+ to land a position or do you think that Net+ could lead to entry level as well?
How are things going with your position? -
Cisco Inferno Member Posts: 1,034 ■■■■■■□□□□I know I'm late to this thread, but congratulations on the position Betty.
I am also an IBM employee here in Miami, FL.
As you may know, IBM is no longer in the consumer market. They sold off the Lenovo brand a while ago. What they are focused on is enterprise software, cloud computing/data center, and enterprise consulting (you and I).
What happens is that their clients are the largest Fortune 500 companies in the world. They say, "Hey let me future proof you and get you all fancy with the cloud and our cutting edge servers and infrastructure. In order to do this, we need full control of all your IT depts.".
Current employees at such companies get absorbed and any new ones are brought in through IBM. So truthfully, the IT departments of some of the largest companies are IBM employees.
I notice that your assignment is for 6 months at Best Buy. I have already had multiple successive assignments with IBM ranging from Amtrac, Morgan Stanley, to finally WPP Group, which is the largest advertising agency in the world (19billion in 2014).
More likely than not, you will be blessed with the opportunity to jump from one Fortune 500 company to another all as an IBM employee. This will expose you to many different environments, people, and connections. Use this to your advantage.
Chances are in either 6 months, or 12 months, you will transfer to another Fortune 500 company that is headquartered in Minneapolis such as 3M, UnitedHealth Group, General Mills or Target corporate.
I would suggest that you try to maximize your skills the best you can while you are working for IBM. Those 3 letters on your resume will do great things if you have the knowledge to back it up.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Good Luck.2019 Goals
