srabiee Member Posts: 1,231 ■■■■■■■■□□I did some quick job searching on Indeed and it definitely looks like there's a good amount of available IT jobs in that area. I would definitely consider relocating there if I hadn't already decided on Salt Lake City. I think convincing my wife to move even further north of WV would be quite difficult, however. techfiend Member Posts: 1,481 ■■■■□□□□□□I get hounded for help desk positions almost daily nowadays, it's probably a great place to get your foot in the door. I don't know about mid and higher positions. There's quite a few of them but competition seems to be pretty stiff. I see the network positions coming in bunches every few months, while the sys admin positions are pretty constant. Has jobsinminneapolis.com helped anyone? I really like the layout but I don't recall ever getting a reply from jobs I applied for on there.
I'm in the wrong part of town, NE, while most of the jobs are SW. Can you imagine that cross town drive during traffic hours? I'm guessing at least 90m of stop and go to travel 25 miles. Currently it takes about 30m to travel 10 miles all in the NE.2018 AWS Solutions Architect - Associate (Apr) 2017 VCAP6-DCV Deploy (Oct) 2016 Storage+ (Jan)

Yes, the crosstown is terrible. Since I am downtown, I am generally going the opposite way of traffic. Eagan and Eden Prairie seems to be the hot spots.
I have glanced at jobsinminneapolis, but I use craigslist, dice.com, and indeed.com. Those seemed to help the best. And actually, I got my current job because my recruiter found me on Linkedin.

Unfortunately it's become a google hangout and I don't recognize anyone but the organizer. I learned this from my recruiter the other day. What a great time for a career change!
As proof of this, my husband started looking for a new job on June 21st and already starts his new gig (with a $20k pay raise) on Monday. I decided to go into IT in March and I start my first Help Desk job on Monday.
So, wow.
Congrats on the new job! Be prepared to deal with men who have never worked with a woman before. -

What are you insinuating with this comment, and what is your basis for making such a claim? The United States isn't exactly Saudi Arabia you know.WGU Progress: Master of Science - Information Technology Management (Start Date: February 1, 2015)

No, not Saudi Arabia. But it's definitely a male dominated industry and I have already gotten a taste of it. IE, listening to guys talk about "smokin' hot girls" and being called "hunny" a lot. There is unprofessionalism in a lot of fields and it is not limited to IT, but those kinds of things were definitely a change after being in Social Work. More locker room talk, I guess.

linuxabuser Member Posts: 97 ■■□□□□□□□□OP's post is nearly the exact comment I was going to make.
My basis for making that claim is working with idiots for the last 8 years. -
Mow Member Posts: 445 ■■■■□□□□□□There are idiots everywhere. I have noticed that many men in the industry in my area seem threatened when a woman is in IT. Comments are made about women not belonging in IT, not being bale to configure a router as well as a man (what?), and their aptitude is compared with their attractiveness. It's really sad, actually.

I admit to using hun, but its never meant to be disrespectful. I also say hey man, hey dude, etc to guys. I'm terrible with names and its just a filler because hun sounds a lot less disrespectful to me than woman. Hey "woman" reminds me of the jerks who have no respect for women at all. Plus I'm a guy and if I said something like "Hey girlfriend" people would look at me really odd and wonder what more is wrong with me than they already know! lol.
All joking aside, there are a lot of unqualified people in IT. In general there are a lot of people who go into IT that have no business being there. They lack the problem solving skills to really do any of the advanced work, and I don't have the time to babysit someone. Regardless of gender I see this being true.
I also agree with it mostly being male dominated, and I love when I find gems on youtube of the girls making fun of the guys for it.--

Either of these would require me to remember your name. I think I mentioned that I am horrible with names. I don't even remember the names of my nieces and nephews without a long pause, and they are family.
If I didn't have kids, I would be totally fine with being an old hermit.--
