Asking for a friend

Hello I am asking this question for a friend.

Where should I start certification wise. I have about 3 years IT experience in various Technical Support/ Helpdesk Roles. I worked for "squad" about 12 years ago but we mostly sent things away. I have a year experience with desktop support and about 6 months doing network support/ network monitoring. I have done one segmentation of a network project that lasted 2 months. I really liked the desktop support and segmentation roles. I only have some MTA infrastructure certifications but I do have a bachelors in a non tech field (Communications) and an Associate. Should I go back to school and get a masters in IT? I'm looking to get something that makes me look more mid level IT as I hope to settle down what should I look for? I'm hoping the cert can lead me into a role doing something more than phone calls I'd also hope to land a job making at least 45K. I live in the Midwest is this realistic? Where should I start cert wise do I really need my A+ with almost 7+ years IT experience?

Hey guys any advice you have for my friend is appreciated.

A MCSA 2012 would be a good first step toward a mid level role.
