Have any of you ever studied for an exam just for the knowledge, but went for another certification instead ?

People do this all the time. Yes, many times. Sometimes specific knowledge from a domain is requires but do not necessarily need to be a subject matter expert for everything related to the said certificate. It's just good material that you could use to do your job better.
