What Certifications Will Be the Best for Working in a Data Center ?

Hello everyone,

I started working as a data center support engineer (L1 support).

The company I work for, provides collocation, basic/advanced monitoring and managed services to enterprise networks.

I basically monitor and troubleshoot minor problems in the nodes, or escalate them to the higher level support engineers.

I would like to know what certifications might help me advance in such a field.

I am currently a Network+ and CCENT.

I think most certifications could help in a data center environment but with virtualization at center stage - I'd probably choose VCP6-* and/or CCNA then CCNP Data Center. Maybe MS Azure stuff too.

Server+ wouldn't hurt you.

Since you already have CCENT, I would go to CCNA DataCenter certification directly.

Server+ and CCNA Data Center will look very good on your resume after 1-2 years working there.

I have been working as a Level 1 Datacenter Tech for about 3 months now. Since you already have network certs, I would look to obtaining Cisco or Juniper certs depending on what your company uses. Virtualization cert wouldn't hurt either in the long run. I will be going for CCNA in the near future.

I thought of perusing CCNA Data Center. Although I have CCENT, I still need to pass two exams.

For now, I'll check on Server+ and a VMWare certification, at least VCA since it doesn't require attending a class.

Might want to pick up ITIL 2011 Foundations then or the like...

Also, you should probably have no problem passing Server+ and/or Cloud+.

For VMware, you can take the class online at a community college like Stanly for only ~$200 dollars - then you can take VCP6 Delta.

Will your work pay for anything?

I already enrolled in local ITIL Foundation class, which will start soon

As for the company, they will only pay for the exams fees, that's why I didn't consider VCP6. I thought I have to attend a 2000+$ class. Thanks for the tip.
