Exam 70-461 Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2012

Hi Guys

Just wanted to know if i complete just the above exam, will i get any certificate?

Also is it good for me to get the MCTS: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance as i am currently a bi developer

Looks like by itself you'll just get an MCP designation. You can take a couple more exams and get MCSA SQL Server 2012, and then if you want, there are two MCSE tracks which are two more exams each.

I think that used to be kind of true for 2008 (432 and 448 do, but 646, 685 don't have MCTS), but no longer the case for 2012. MS says "MCTS certifications are no longer in development".

There's a whole bunch of current 70- series that don't get you an MCTS, including all the SQL 2012 exams. You will get the MCP still though. The downside is that unlike MCTS, the MCP designation doesn't tell you anything about what it was for.

Hi TacoRocket,

so if i take exam 70-461 i will get a certificate that i can put on my resume,while working todays my mcsa?

I was a bit surprised to get an "MCP" after passing 70-486 and then an "MS" after passing 70-480.

When you say the MCTS certifications are no longer in development ,does this apply for the 2008 certificates?

Probably the easiest thing is to direct you to the current MCTS page here:

And the current "Specialist" page here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/learning/specialist-certification.aspx

Specialist sort of replaces the MCTS designation. Some certs got changed to Specialist from MCTS, some remain MCTS, some (strangely) are both. Some newer certs are "Specialist". I think the change happened about 2011, but not 100% on the date. Things do change from time to time, but MS are reasonably good about giving warning.

The other thing to look at is the page for the exam you want to sit:

At the "Credit toward certification" part. If it has an associated MCTS, it will appear there.
