MTA vs MCITP Server 2008, Which is the Better Certification?
jasonmadrug84
Hi all,
I'm curious to know as I begin my MS Server studies which certification would be most valuable and persuasive to an employer:
MTA Server Administration Fundamentals [exam 98-365]
VS
Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuration [exam 70-640]
I've already purchased the course from TestOut for the 70-640.
THANK YOU
,
-Jason

How much experience do you have with Windows Server? Do you have work currently, or looking at a particular area?
The MTA is a bit like an MS focused version of Server+, a fairly good overview to get your feet wet and prepare you for diving deeper. The 70-640 is a pretty heavy subject unless you have a fair bit of experience with Active Directory.

Having thought about it, then 70-642 is probably a better exam to start with (assuming Windows Server is not new to you) especially since you also have CCNA R+S. A possible Microsoft path is MTA -> 70-642 -> 70-640 -> 70-646 -> 70-417.
You will probably need a home lab to get hands on practical experience in line with the exam objectives. You could replace the MTA with some enthusiastic home labbing. It's really more about getting that general overview and getting comfortable using it.
