Cisco VIRL - Alternatives to LXC hosts?

So, just throwing this out here hoping to get a bit of discussion back..
Instead of going through the trouble to setup LXC hosts, which I have a hard time finding documentation on setting up a dummy one.. what would you guys suggest? I also understand that at the higher level, you're not as concerned with hosts as you are the upper level protocols and ensuring your networking devices talk to each other.
Off the top of my head, I just assume I could assign loopback interfaces on a L3 switch/router to mimic hosts. Yay or nay? Seems like the most simple solution unless someone has another way.
