Hey all,

So I have some bad news. 2 weeks ago, I had a severe case of tonsillitis and said to myself, "F@ck this.....I want them out" (had tonsillitis many many times in my life) . Went and met with a well known reputable ENT specialist. Did the bloodwork and got a call last Wednesday from the hospital. To my surprise, I can get them out February 8th instead of in December (apparently, someone canceled their surgery). Great :). But what sucks is I will have to take a whole week off from classes to recover and rest from the agonizing pain. My instructor for my Microsoft Networking courses says I'll have to try to catch up when I return or try to work ahead.

This put stress on me because I have 2 final Cisco exams at the end of this week then we start Database Design next week. I went and spoke with the Dean of Technology with my program. She said that under my approval, she can authorize me a AW (Authorized Withdrawal) which will not affect my GPA if i drop out of the Networking classes. This means that I can just finish up the next Cisco course and a Linux course for this year. Then in September, i'll retake Networking 3 and continue where I left off. So it means I won't graduate until 2018. (when I'm 26) :/. A classmate said, "If you don't get them out, if they swell too much, they could block your airway and cause asphyxiation"."

Any thoughts? Has anyone had to do this at their jobs/schools under medical absences?

Why withdrawal? Don't they offer a self/independent study option? I don't see why can't catch up after only missing a week.

When I was in college (wayyyy back in the '80s, yeah, I'm old), I was faced with some rather necessary abdominal surgery. I put it off for a long time because I didn't want to miss any school and didn't want to drop out in the middle of the quarter. Recovery time was just way too long to have this done during the quarter and still maintain my studies. By putting it off, I let myself get worse. I finally got to the point where enough was enough and withdrew (was taking courses at two universities at that time) and started prepping for surgery. At the time, getting those classes in was so important. When I look back, I should've stopped everything and concentrated on my health first. In the long run, it doesn't really matter if you get certified/graduate in three months or in six months. Take care of your health needs first. The classes/certs will still be there when you recover. Also, you can still study on your own during your recovery period.

This. I have never seen a school make someone withdraw for only missing a week. Things may be different there though.

It's not that I am withdrawing from the entire program, but I might just withdraw from this specific course if I can't catch up. My college does offer a self study (long distance) option, but it's not applicable to our technology programs. I plan to work ahead starting Monday because my instructor pulled me aside and said that he admires me and think I will go far because I study hard.

Oh, and as for my Cisco course, I passed the practical exam but failed the theory by 5%. Have to retake it next year (2016-2017 school year) unless I get my CCENT/CCNA by November.
